The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the LORD shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing; To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. Ps 92: 12-15

Christmas 2010

Christmas this year began with a forecast for SNOW!! The kids received an early gift of an extra week of Christmas break due to the snow the week before. They missed all their finals. It was a crazy week at RSCC trying to have classes in between snow storms and ice storms. We made it through and now 2 glorious weeks of rest and relaxation... Not exactly something that ever happens during my Christmas break, but I do dream.

On Thursday evening, we hosted the Mehlhorn, Collins, Adkisson Christmas this year - a tradition since the kids were little. Here is a snapshot from the evening and just below it is one of Courtney, Lindsay and Alyssa at one of our Christmases from years past. The date says 1996, if that is correct, Alyssa was 4 years old.

Due to the weather forecast, we had to make a change in our normal Christmas Day dinner at Mom and Dad's. Vonda, Lee & Emily came down on Christmas Eve for brunch -complete with Chocolate Gravy!!! It was wonderful. This made for a food filled day as we went to Jeff's parent's that evening.

After feasting and opening gifts at Mom & Dad's, Vonda, Alyssa, and I sat around singing hymns from a book I got Dad for Christmas (Then Sings My Soul). I love to sing and anytime I can get someone to sit around and sing with me, I'm all for it!

2 things I'm tired of saying....

If I had a quarter for every time I've said two things in the last few months I'd be a RICH woman...

1. I don't have time

2. I don't have the money

This whole master's degree program takes up an enormous amount of time. No matter that you only take one class at a time, there is soooo much to read! Since August, I've read nothing but journal articles regarding communication research. Blah, Blah, Blah! That's all I can say. Somewhere there must be a class that will be interesting??? I looked longingly last night at some books I'd bought or been loaned months ago: Beverly Lewis's new series, Karen Kingsbury's now old series, a Tamera Alexander book I found. All completely ignored. I told Jeff I needed the 2nd book in a series for Christmas, but then, nevermind, I don't have time... I honesty can't think of a time recently when I've watched one of my fav TV shows. I did watch Toy Story 3 with Logan this weekend and will be regretting 'wasting' that time this coming weekend. That 25 page research paper didn't write itself while I was lollygagging..

For some reason our bank account has hit an all time low in the last 5 months. Recovery has been slow and, with Christmas, recovery is probably a long way off. My kids are tired of hearing it. They haven't suffered. They may talk as if they have, but they haven't seen real hard times yet. I hope they never have to.

I've got a ton of pics to post - just random shots from crazy happenings in the Adkisson clan. Maybe I'll get to that this week :)

out of the mouth of... Logan

Took a day off last Wednesday and spent the day in Turkey Creek with the kiddos. We had a blast. No fighting, no arguing... Are they growing up a little?? I'm afraid to put that in print cause I know they'll be fussing again in no time.

Top 8 laughter moments:

8. all 3 of us making a beeline for the bathrooms at Ross's

7. text from Logan repeating 'sounds' coming from the men's stall next door

6. spitting tea all over the parking lot and nearly p'ing my pants

5. Logan spitting tea just cause...

4. shopping at the Goodwill

3. finding books for my 'other' family

2. non-stop talking from the man in the booth next to us at McDonald's

# 1 bout of laughter: Coming home, I wanted to take the 'long way', so I could 'observe' the latest happenings at the neighbors.

Logan, "Why you going this way?

Me, "To check out what the neighbors are doing" :)

Logan, "Ah, Mom, you're such a nose picker!"

Me, "It's rubber-necker!! If you're going to call me names, get it right! Geez!!"

Wow.. a post??

It has been nearly 2 months since I posted anything. I know exactly where the time has gone... It has been a crazy 2 months and the last thing on my mind was blogging.

I won't bore you with all the details of the past 2 months, but life has been a little overwhelming :)

Master's class: This has totally consumed the past 2 weeks. It probably wouldn't have been so time consuming if I had practiced a little more time management and less procrastination. If I've learned anything from 'going back to school' it is a whole new appreciation for those students I see everyday who are doing it. Working full time, mothering full time (and ALL the things that go along with that)... makes taking a class a whole 'nother job! I took the final test Sunday night and it was horrid! My bibliography paper had me in tears on Thursday evening. I finally just gave up (it was due in 15 minutes anyway) and submitted it with what I know were errors.

I've debated bailing out of the whole master's program. Part of me wants to finish. I enjoy learning... but the bigger part of me wants to say, 'Who cares' and 'Why subject myself to such torture'. My next class starts on the 24th. It's already paid for, so I'm going ahead with it. I've heard the class I just finished is the worse (and it was only worth 1 credit), so maybe the next will be better.

Work: From the first of August (yes right at the peak of fall registration) til just last week, I was on my own again at work. It's a long, unbelievable story as to what happened, but believe me it was a very stressful July. I'm thrilled with my new person, though, so it all worked out for the best!!!!

In the next month, ball season will begin and our evenings will be crazy once again. Thankfully, for the first time ever, Lys and Log will play on the same nights, in the same gyms. WhooHooo!!!

I'll try to keep you posted ;)

Not the best weekend for camping...

Okay, so Jeff has been dying to try out our new (to us) camper. He insisted on going this past weekend, which was definitely NOT the best timing. Me and the kids had plans to shop on Friday for Tennessee's tax-exempt weekend. (Even though I was advised against this as sales tax funds my salary :P ). Saturday was Meghan and Jonathan's wedding. Thursday night was the election results evening. This weekend just had everything stacked against it. Should've listened...

The election results were totally disappointing. We were actually able to tune in WECO from the campsite down in Meigs county. I've never lost so many races in my life!!!

Friday morning, me, Lys, Tonia and Lindsay headed out for a quick trip to Turkey Creek for some tax free shopping. We heard Cheryl and Courtney were heading that way and decided to meet up for lunch. It was Cheryl's birthday and after her disappointing loss the day before, she needed some cheering up. We had Wasabi's!!!! My favorite... We debated how to break the news to the guys. Logan would be so mad that we went without him. We made up a story about having chicken at McDonald's, but in the end we all saved enough from our plates to take them back a doggy bag. When we got out of Wasabi's it was 12:30. Westley text Tonia and said he had to be in Wartburg to catch the bus to their scrimmage by 3 pm. We did the math - that means we had to leave Turkey Creek by 1. We had only been to 2 stores. After a quick trip to Rue 21, we made a mad drive back to Ten Mile.

On Saturday, Lys and I headed out again for Meghan's wedding. We went home to get ready.... The bath houses only had one shower stall, of course no air conditioning, and worse yet, no lights! Made showering after dark interesting. The wedding was gorgeous. Meghan looked beautiful as always. Joey Williams and I joked about being each other's dates since our spouses weren't there. The photographer took our pic at the reception as a couple.

While at the wedding, Mike decided to take a dip in the lake. Now Mike's camping trip wasn't perfectly timed either. He had to work everyday, so Saturday afternoon was his first time to see the campground in daylight. He took a running jump into the lake. Only problem with that is the water around the shoreline was only 2 feet deep. Broke heel and bone in leg... Needless to say, he spent the rest of the evening in the emergency room. He is sooo aggravated at himself. That heel bone is the worst bone to break in your body. Takes about 15 weeks to heal. My mom went through that couple years ago.

Overall, the time spent at the campground was wonderful. The weather was beautiful with humidity not so unbearable. Logan and I enjoyed lots of bike riding. He, however, had numerous wrecks and is still doctoring his poor knees... If it weren't for all the laundry you have after a camping trip, I'd do it more often.... or maybe not.

Being Ministers of God...

During one of my 'me and God' times at the beach, I was reading in Psalms and was led to some scripture in II Corinthians. I'm sure I can't relay to others what the Lord put on my heart that morning, but I want to blog about it as much for my benefit as anyone else's.

Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed: But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, in stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings; by pureness, by knowlege, by longsuffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned, by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left, by honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true; As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed; As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things. II Corinthians 6:3-10.

Maybe why this scripture spoke to me so much was due to the fact that I know God has been speaking to me regarding this area already. Am I known as a Christian among my friends, coworkers, students? Do others see me as a minister of God? And if so, am I bringing shame to the ministry? Oh how that grieves my heart... I never want to be the reason someone might not come to know Jesus. In distresses, tumults, afflictions (things that happen everyday) do I react with longsuffering (I know I lack in this), kindness, love unfeigned (not pretend love, but real and genuine)? Do I allow the Holy Spirit to lead my reaction?

There have been several new trials in my life lately and I wonder if my response is pleasing to the ministry. I believe God has put me in a position where I cross paths with hundreds of new people every semester and I want my life to portray the attributes of a Christian. I want others to see Christ in me. As Pastor said on Sunday, "Do you need to wear a t-shirt that says 'I Love Jesus' for folks to know that you do??"

Let me be alway rejoicing...

*the difference between always and alway: Always is at every occasion; Alway is all the time, perpetual.

Cape San Blas 2010

We left Friday afternoon for a much anticipated vacation to Cape San Blas, Florida. Where is that you ask? Just about as far south as you can go on Florida's Gulf Coast.. Our initial plans were to go to the Destin area this year. We had never been to the white sand beaches where the water was supposed to be crystal clear. As we searched endlessly for a house that suited our needs (input AFFORDABLE here), we got further and further away. Cape San Blas turned out to be about 3 hours east of Destin. We were as remote as we were in the Outer Banks in North Carolina last year. No fast food places. No souvenier shops. No big crowds. Just rows of beautiful homes, sand and water. The sand was white. The water, however, was definitely not clear. It was the dirtiest ocean water I'd ever seen. Any white swimwear turned a dull brown. Just like swimming in Watts Bar :P. The locals attributed it to the bad storms the week before our arrival. They also said it would clear up by Monday. Not so. I think it was even dirtier by Wednesday. Our neighbor cornered me one day complaining. I think she wanted an invite to our pool. They had a teenage boy, so no invite there :).

We travelled with a trunk load of luggage/food/junk and 3 teenagers in the back seat. Alyssa's friend, Faith, went with us this year. We definitely could have used some extra room. Logan made no complaints regarding his extra back seat buddy, but he doesn't complain about much of anything. He is so easy going. Maybe too much so at times. He's like his Uncle Tony (and his mom) in that way. We spent a night in Troy, Alabama, before starting out to finish the trip on Saturday morning. Jeff hates to travel. He prefers to break up a trip, but I'd just as soon drive all the way in one day. Maybe because I'm just cheap that way...

We arrived Saturday afternoon and of course the house was not ready. We drove around the Cape for a while and then sat on the front porch of the realtor eating cherries and spitting seeds into a pipe (well Logan spit them; I just threw them). Tonia and Mike were already there, but spent their time eating at Coneheads. (The only restuarant on the Cape).

The house was beautiful. I loved the kitchen with its huge granite island with seating for 8. The boys ended up with the top floor 'eagles nest'. This proved to be the best place for them.... They left enough sand to fill a child's sand box. The biggest downfall to the house this year was the lack of TV's :0)~ Only 4 in the whole house. Our house last year had TV's in every bedroom and one in both living areas as well as the eagle's nest. 9 in all. That's practically a TV a piece.

Oh, I almost forgot, what the kids considered to be the biggest downfall. No cell service on the Cape!! Can you imagine their dismay??? How could they survive? Turns out Faith had the only phone with service. And we all have Verizon. I was thankful she had service cause she'd have died without talking to Trent. The only internet access was via walled cord. Until, I noticed our neighbors on their deck with laptops. I figured they must have wireless. :) This made everyone's day. What with 3 laptops among us, a bountiful supply of iPod touches, communication with the outside world was once again possible.

One of the best parts about being on vacation is mornings. Whenever we are at the beach, I try to spend each morning with a walk/run/jog and then I sit on the porch with my Bible and enjoy some 'me & God time'. I say walk/run/jog because I seem to do quite a mixture. I had been doing Jilian's 30 day shred DVD for over a month, every day prior to our trip. I hadn't been running. You'd think running wouldn't have been too much different. Not so. There were sprinklers along my route. Each morning, I'd longingly eye them wondering what folks would say if I just bent over and got a drink from one :) On the last morning I got a late start (7:30 am). The sun was beaming on me. I thought, "I'm just going to run through those sprinklers today." Imagine my dismay when I turned the corner and saw that the sprinklers were off!!! It was so HOT!!

During one of my morning Bible readings, the Lord spoke to me from II Corinthians 6: 3 - 10.. I plan to blog about that in another post.

The weather on Sunday and Monday was rainy, so on Monday, everyone decided to drive to Panama City and see a movie. Everyone but Alyssa and Jeff. The thoughts of driving over an hour one way to the movies made them sick. They are so much alike. Granted I didn't care in the least about going to a movie, but I was willing. So, Jeff, Alyssa, Faith and I drove up to Mexico City Beach. Supposedly, there were lots of shops there. Nope, nothing to see. Rather miserable journey in fact.

The rest of the week was HOT and sunny. Tonia had made an appointment with a photographer to have the girls' senior pictures taken on Tuesday evening. They were so excited. Lots of outfit changes. We made a makeshift changing room on the beach (which consisted of sheets from the boys' room). The girls had a blast and said it was something they'd never forget. They felt like models on a photo shoot. I'm excited to get the CD of the pictures. She took over 300!!

I had to put this on here cause someone said I looked as skinny as Faith :P

Jeff and Mike spent a lot of time fishing this year. Jeff ususally doesn't fish in the ocean, but he seemed to enjoy it this time. They caught lots of fish, but never managed to have a fish fry. Jeff caught a flounder one day. That was the weirdest looking fish I'd ever seen. Completely white on one side. Two eyes on the other side. Sharp teeth. I thought it was a piranha.!!!

Don't you just love this pic of Jeff :P

On Wednesday evening, we drove back up to Mexico Beach so the kids could parasail. Now parasailing looks like a very enjoyable experience, but at $45 for 7 minutes, not worth it for this cheap skate. Alyssa used the $20 Mamaw gave her and I had to chip in the rest. She said it was well worth it. The best part was watching them ride out to the boat on one of those banana boats. Faith said they wouldn't get wet, so no need to wear bathing suits. Definitely not so. They were drenched.

I saved a fortune on hair care products! :)

We had rented the house Saturday to Saturday, but the Mehlhorns' and Collins' had to leave on Friday. Faith began packing to go with them. I still don't understand that whole deal, but because we brought her and felt responsible for her delivery back to TN, we decided to head home as well. Even though I hated to give up a day on the beach (especially one already paid for), I was glad for an extra day home before work on Monday. We washed clothes the whole time we were there, so not too much laundry!!!

The drive home was an interesting one. Jeff 'let' me drive after we stopped for breakfast. We travelled home through Georgia instead of Alabama. Seemed a little shorter. Do you know how hard it is to have a 3 car convoy along the interstate? Especially when decisions to exit are made at the last minute? I was bringing up the rear, knew we should be in the right lane to turn, we were in the far left passing a semi. Not pretty.... Thought we were all going to die... At our stop after Atlanta, Mike complimented me on my leading through that area. He said he was afraid I'd get all 'white-knuckled" and slow down. Not much confidence in my driving skills, huh??

Crepe Myrtles were beautiful in Alabama. I loved this purple one!

Got home at 3:30 pm to a torrential downpour. From what I understand, that was the first rain since we left. Mom fixed supper - fried okra, corn on cob, cucumbers, pinto beans, cornbread... Wonderful!!! We cooked everyday at the beach, but nothing like good 'home' cooking.

Now planning next years trip with the girls - NYC, NY!!!!

Just who is the funny one...

My kids often bring this question up during family outings or while sitting around the house. They want to know just who is the funny one in our family - Me or Dad. Now that may seem like an unlikely question to some. Jeff doesn't appear to be funny at all to most people. He is a practical joker. One who relishes in playing tricks on people and then sitting back and grinning like an opossum as he watches his theatrics unfold. But he can be funny. We pulled up to the drive thru at McDonalds the other day and the lady said in a very annoying sing-songy voice, "would you like to try our new... " and Jeff answered in the same sing songy voice, 'no, thank you'. She quickly followed with a crushed, clipped voice, "order when ready". It was hilarious. The only thing, Jeff never laughs out loud. My kids often joke that they can count on one hand the number of times they have heard Jeff laugh out loud. That sounds sad, doesn't it? It's really not; he is funny. It is just expressed in a subdued manner.

Now me, on the other hand, will laugh hysterically over almost anything. Even about things that are not really funny. I can act stupid with the best of them and 'try' to entertain my kids with great antics and comments. I'm the loud funny one. Not everyone knows this about me either. Lys was talking to someone one evening while Logan and I were making great fun of a man on 'In it to win it'. Whomever she was talking to could not believe the hysteria going on at the house. "That just doesn't sound like your mom", they said. Lys, "you just wouldn't believe how she acts." Now I'm not sure that was a compliment, but I believe it was.

Thus the question, who is the funny one??? I always argue it's me... but I think perhaps it's... Logan when he's having a blonde moment, Alyssa when she's relating a story, Jeff in the midst of a great practical joke, and me - just cause I have the best time.

We spent the weekend together in Pigeon Forge laughing. We had a hoot at Olive Garden. I thought Logan would truly loose it over Jeff's disgust with his food. I'm sure the waitress thought we were laughing at her. We had a great time and I hope my kids will always remember laughing together as a family.

'Can we stop'...

Summer basketball camps are in full swing. Logan has been in Sequatchie since Monday. Alyssa is at RSCC for the next three days. This weekend, we also squeeze in a baseball tournament in Pigeon Forge. :) Fun, Fun..

We traveled to Sequatchie last night to watch Logan in a JV tourney. What a drive! It was 95 miles from our house to the high school. We had a blast on the way down. Me and Lys asked Jeff a hundred times, 'can we stop'. He never would let us. Such a spoiler of fun. We so wanted to stop at the overlook on the way home and take a picture of the sunset. Nope. So here is the picture I got...

We saw numerous signs for a new 'dipped' cone at McDonald's. Would he stop??? Nope. Finally in Rockwood he decides he's hungry and will stop at Harriman Mickey D's. Did they have the new dipped cone? Nope!!! How rude!!!!!!!!! We must have passed 5 McDonald's that had them but we just had to stop in Harriman.

Tomorrow it is back to RSCC. Then on Friday, Jeff and Logan head to PF while Alyssa and I spend the day at RSCC. That's how it goes. Non-stop next 3 weeks. (plus we get to squeeze in Bible School next week too).

Gut feelings - serious stuff...

Have you ever wanted to run screaming mad after taking advice from people that went against your gut instinct??? You should always, always, follow your gut! That's where I'm at currently.

Each of us possesses a unique God-given gift; the inherent ability to tap into our instinctive intuition. Instead of laying back and playing it safe, why not go with your gut feelings and see where they take you?

"Trust your hunches. They're usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level." Dr. Joyce Brothers
I know my hunch was right. I know I should've followed it. I chose the easy path only to make it harder on myself in the long run.
BTW: don't try to read too much into this. It doesn't relate to my family, my church, or God.

Graduation pics..

I'm following through on my promise to get Logan's 8th grade graduation pics posted. Yeah me!When I zoomed in, they were very blurry. So, here is Logan receiving his 'diploma'.
I didn't get a pic of Logan walking in... Most unorganized ceremony I've ever seen.. With maybe the exception of a few GED graduations I put on :) They were playing some awful music. I just happened to turn around and there was Logan walking in. (He was first, of course). No direction from the staff on stage to stand. No 'Pomp and Circumstance'. Couldn't hear the first two young ladies' speeches. (Thankfully someone yelled out to turn up the sound). SO, above is one of him leaving... Logan and Josh

Prom: better late than never..

Prom was April 22, so I'm just a month late sharing pics. Not too bad ;)

After a useless trip to Knoxville looking for a dress that Alyssa and I could agree on in both cost and style, we found one at Vivian's in Oliver Springs. And can you believe this?? I stopped in and fell in love with this dress, took Lys back that evening and she liked it best? Who'd have thought? The color was gorgeous and I loved the way it laced up in the back. Not too fond of the way the front tended to slip down. Didn't do that in the store...
This year, she went with a bunch of girls to the prom. None of them could make up their mind about what time to leave, where to eat, where to meet... etc. It also rained all day and they were calling for terrible storms that evening. Nonetheless, I think she had a good time..

Lindsay's and Alyssa's dresses both laced up the back.

It's official

Well, it is official. I now have a senior and a freshman at my house. Prayers, please. Logan 'graduated' from the 8th grade last night. He looked very handsome and I did take a picture, but of course it is still on my camera. I will post them....

Last August, I bought him a suit to wear. He'd been dying for one. (Westley and Seth both had been wearing suits to church). His reasoning was that he could wear it to 8th grade prom and graduation. Did he go to prom?? Nope. Did he wear it to graduation? Nope. So much for that. Had a momma tell me her son was wearing one and she couldn't help it the other mothers wouldn't make their kids. Not a battle I wanted to fight. And if I've learned one thing in the past few years it is to pick your battles.

An award??? Did they just call out Logan's name for the Language Arts award??? Seriously?? Yep, he got it. I'm still in shock, but less so than I would have been if a different teacher had awarded it. (Coach Davis recommended him). The kid hates to read. He read one book in 6th grade and did book reports on it all 3 years of middle school.

Today's the official first day of summer vacation. Lys even took Logan to high school with her today. Why not? He graduated from 8th grade last night? They spent all day running around Wartburg. Eating out. Playing volleyball at the park. You know what I don't like about summer?? The fact my kids aren't in school. :) Surprising? Don't get me wrong. I love not having homework, endless fees for this and that, breakfast and mad rushes out the door. But, at least you know where your kids are all day long. When they are this age, going to Mamaw's everyday is not as exciting as it once was. Logan wants a job. Lys wants to run the roads. I'm thankful my kids are involved in basketball because starting next week they'll be spending their days in gyms. I beat myself up daily during the summer. What to allow them to do and what not to??? I don't guess anyone else does this, right?

On another note, let me brag a minute - you may choose not to read this paragraph. Logan passed Algebra I and his EOC!! 6 A's, 2 B's. That studying really does pay off. Alyssa made all A's, even in her college Sociology class. Don't know how she pulled that off, but we're not questioning it. :)

Oh and I will post those graduation pics... I promise... ;)

Happy 14th...

Today is Logan's 14th birthday :) Wow.. how time flies. I am so blessed to have 2 beautiful, smart, healthy children. I am so thankful that God has saved them and I am excited to see what plans the Lord has for their future.

In honor of Logan, I will recount some pregnancy memories...

  • From January til May while pregnant with you, I never once breathed through my nose. Every membrane in my body was swollen for 5 months. I can still remember the air I inhaled the morning after you were born. Amazing..

  • I only gained 18 lbs. while pregnant with you. Thank you :)

  • I carried you like a perfect little basketball, (which sat firmly on my bladder).

  • I craved little debbie oatmeal pies, deviled eggs, and potato salad.

  • Your dad and I watched 'Roadhouse' on TV at home while I was in labor. For a brief moment, I thought about naming you Dalton after Patrick Swayze.

  • Prior to watching 'Roadhouse', I watched a very sad 'ER'. A lady died while in labor. Jeff fussed at me.

  • We left for the hospital about 11:30 pm.

  • Your dad was a little nervous on the way over thinking I'd waited too late to leave for the hospital. I think he drove about 90 mph.

  • It must have been a slow night at the hospital because Dr. Metcalf and the nurses sat in our room prior to delivery talking about the day's happenings.

  • You were born at the early, ungodly hour of 3:05 am on Tuesday, May 7.

  • You weighed 8lbs, 13 oz, and were 21 inches long.

  • I didn't name you right away. Surprise :). Mom is so slow on making decisions....

  • La Leche League took our picture the next day to promote their program in the newspaper. Still no name. You are baby boy Adkisson in the paper. Sorry...

  • Big Sister made Mamaw get up at 6:30 am the next morning to come to the hospital. She couldn't wait to see you. Even if she did pray for a little sister :)

  • We left the hospital on a beautiful, unseasonably warm Wednesday afternoon.
  • I wrote this post on your birthday, but planned to insert some great baby pic of you. I can't remember to do that, so here's the post...

For such a time as this....

I was blessed to attend the National Day of Prayer observance at the Morgan County Courthouse today. What a wonderful blessing it is that our county leaders organize such an event. You couldn't do this just anywhere. Nor would most leaders take such a prominate role. I think our county has some great leaders in office. Ones who seek God's will and still believe in the power of prayer. A young lady sang 'Sweet Hour of Prayer' and did a great job. That is another one of my favorite hymns.

Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Father’s throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief,
And oft escaped the tempter’s snare,
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!

Several prayers were lifted for our leaders, our emergency personnel, our educators, our local churches, and our military. It was definitely worth standing in the sun and swatting bugs for the blessing it was to me.

When I got in the car to leave, this song was on the radio:

It Pays To Pray
It Pays to call upon His name
It Pays To Pray
To see a miracle displayed
You’ll forget the word, “impossible”
When you seek the Savior’s face
You’ll know He will make a way
It Pays To Pray

Isn't it funny how God works? :)

"The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in Him" Nahum 1:7

GRE stands for grrrrr....

So, yesterday I took the GRE (graduate records examination) because I'm considering taking courses toward my Master's degree. Ugh! I haven't taken a test in years (probably like almost 20). I even had to write 2 essays... one argumentative and one something else (my opinion on a topic given). I can't tell you what the topics were because I had to write some big long statement promising not to share anything on the test. Anyway, I finished my papers in advance of the time. Now I would have advised my GED students to take all the time allotted for revision, etc, but I just couldn't do it. Not sure how I did on those...

I got the results back immediately after completing the exam for the verbal and quantitative portions. I made what I needed to for the program I'm considering, but I'm sure I could have done better. I've been planning to take it since January, but didn't do a good job studying (don't tell Logan). The vocabulary was daunting.. the analogies intimidating. Most of the math was okay. My math is a little fresher in my mind since I've been teaching a little algebra I and II to Logan and Alyssa.

I bought a study guide at a yard sale for $0.50. It must have been out-of-date cause one section I was expecting wasn't on the test. When the computer said I was done, I was a little worried.

I'm planning to take classes through Austin Peay. They have a masters in communication completely online. They also have a masters in management online, but it requires the MAT instead of GRE. That's like 100 analogies... WHY??? Are analogies really that indicative of your potential for success??

Well, I hope the banality of this post has not put you to sleep. I've got to start practicing abstemious habits. :)

Couldn't help those last 2 sentences... I learned those vocab words this week. I'll see what other words I can throw into my posts...

Hat Party

A couple of Fridays ago, Mom and I attended a hat party for my Aunt. She is undergoing chemo for breast cancer, and, of course, lost all her hair. I thought such a party was a great idea. The local support group, SHOC (survivors helping others cope), do this quite frequently. With little warning about the upcoming event and no time to go any where other than Wartburg, I had to find something in town. Then Mom had the idea to wear our hats :) It was all in fun because, afterall, it was a "hat party". I found us a couple of huge sun hats at the Family Dollar. I felt like I was attending the Kentucky Derby. While I was waiting in the front yard for Mom to pick me up, several cars drove by and honked. I was looking good ;) (or so I thought til I saw the pictures, whew, I got to get to work on this diet business).

Turns out we were the only ones to wear our hats??? We had a great time. Aunt Diana is such a blessing to me and I've been bless to attend church with her over the past several years. After she opened all her hats, scarves, and various other items, we gathered around her for prayer. She has such a great spirit and attitude.

Here are a few pictures from the 'party'.

Easter 2010

Well Easter has come and gone.. I failed to follow through on my intentions of posting earlier in the month. I thought I'd share some pictures from Easter Sunday. It was a beautiful day! We had a wonderful church service and got to sing, "He Lives". That's one of my favorites and I don't know why we can't sing it throughout the year. I mean how can you go wrong with
"I serve a risen Saviour, He's in the world today, I know that He is living whatever men may say, I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer, and just the time I need Him, He's always near, He Lives, He Lives, Christ Jesus lives today, You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart".

For several years we've spent Easter Sunday having lunch with Jeff's family. It has become a tradition. I know my Mom and Dad are not real fond of it as we are their only company most Sundays. We enjoy the time with Jeff's family and now that there's a new little one, egg hunting will take on a new life. (Not that Candace let it die as she dyed eggs every year regardless of the age of the grandkids).

not the best picture of Bradlee, but it turns out to be the only one I have...
